No Added Sugar Watermelon Mint Lemonade

August 13, 2015 by Cris 13 Comments

This sparkling watermelon mint lemonade with lime only – no added sugar whatsoever (NO stevia, NO honey, NO maple syrup, NO SUGAR, I mean nothing at all)  – is my favorite new way of celebrating summer and keep ourselves in shape.

No Added Sugar Watermelon Mint Lemonade
Summer season is officially here! Here we are in high summer – at least it has been for the past two days in Düsseldorf (oooooh believe me, that’s progress) – and watermelon lemonade seems to be the perfect lazy kinda refreshment. As watermelon won’t be here much longer, I had to think of another way (apart from eating it on its own) to use it before it goes.

I will be honest with you, it was pretty darn easy to come up with this different idea as the Internet has plenty of watermelon lemonade recipes. About 1 million of them. And most of them (if not all of them) with all kind of added sugar or artificial sweeteners included.

My different watermelon mint lemonade recipe is very easy and simple to prepare too. You need a seedless watermelon, fresh mint leaves, a few limes and fizzy water. And NO added sugar whatsoever (All I ask from you is that you give it a try. Don’t kill the healthy part, please!).

You see, when the sun is shining down, I love to sip on an ice cold and fizzy drink. And this lemonade is perfect for that. I thought minty watermelon lemonade couldn’t get more refreshing… until I added lime, that is. It lends some marvelously complimentary, fresh flavor without fighting the mint.

Now funny thing, this easy, refreshing and absolutely delicious summer drink has saved my afternoons. I’ve already made it three times now. That good!

I personally prefer to first blend the watermelon in the blender until become smooth and pureed. Then add fresh lime juice and sparkling water for the extra FIZZ flavor. You can of course use lemons, but in my humble little opinion, limes always trump lemons. I also tried it with still water, but it’s not the same.

Now that’s a first to LOVE drinking watermelon mint lemonade. Once it gets pureed, the texture is no longer an issue and it’s totally delicious and refreshing. Here, I combine it with fresh lime juice, fresh mint leaves and sparkling water to make a gorgeous sparkling pink lemonade. It’s heavy on watermelon flavor, but still plenty tart. And, since the watermelon is so naturally sweet, you don’t need to add any kinda sugar. I promise!

Before I forget, I learned to cut up my watermelon the right away (easy too) from my food blogger friend, Sarah. She is not just an amazing Chef (I REALY believe it!), but also so good at explaining kitchen related things in a simplistic way. Here you can find her article on How to Cut a Watermelon.

Oh, I’m so going to have it along my full-in-protein breakfast (these days, I have a crush on sunny side up with smoked salmon and avocado), as a pick-me-up afternoon boost, and as ultimate night drink. Repeat every day, the rest of the week. It’s summertime!

This sparkling watermelon lemonade is perfect, though – at least in my mind. It’s super refreshing and will keep you cool in the stifling heat. The texture is somewhere between juice and smoothie,.
Ingredients
  • - ½ medium watermelon, rind removed, flesh cut into chunks
  • - 4 medium fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • - 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • - 1 cup sparkling water
  • - a handful ice cubes
Instructions
  1. Place all of the ingredients into the blender on high speed for 30-60 seconds, or until smooth. Pour into a big glass and drinking it up. Cheers! 🙂
Notes
STORAGE: Refrigerate, covered, up to 3 days.

Get creative, use the ingredients you have at hand (for example, lemons instead of limes) but make sure you "cook it fit".

    Cris,

Thanks for this wonderful read, your Watermelon Mint sounds very inviting to me, but I must admit I would have to sadly substitute something like cantaloupe for the watermelon or my wife would not be a happy camper.

I love the simplicity and inventiveness you have shown here for this refreshing drink.
This is the 1st time I have seen your site and I have enjoyed my time so thanks for that, all my best,
    CannaGary

There’s nothing more refreshing than watermelon in the sun. I usually just blend it and drink it, but adding mint and lime sounds like a good idea. Another watermelon favorite of mine is watermelon and feta cheese salad. It’s soooo good.)

Yes to watermelons with lime and mint! And I can’t agree more, the summer has been very good over here in Germany so far. Funny, I just realize that I buy way to rarely watermelons.

You should hurry up then. 🙂 They won’t be here much longer. I can’t get enough of watermelons.

This juice is incredible. Was doing a similar one during the summer period on my own account – with a bit of honey I confess. Sparkling water instead of plain sounds like a great thing to try out next time. Nice blog Cris, will be fun following it.
